You can use either a latex or alkyd based paint, but I prefer to use a gloss, as it is easier to keep it clean.

If your walls are smooth and in good shape I would use a satin latex paint. Any imperfections are more noticeable the higher the gloss of the finish. Flat hides more, but, is harder to clean.

First find out if the walls have been painted with an oil-based paint. Latex paint will pull off of the oil-based paint UNLESS you sand it first, and you need to do a good job of sanding.(walls, corners, along baseboards, next to ceiling etc.) There are new products that MIGHT prep an oil-based painted wall so the latex will stick, but you want to make sure the product will work as stated. With any project the prep work usually takes far more time than actual finish, so be patient.
