I have an 80's FlaDuh villa with 2 walls covered with floor to ceiling mirrors that are glued to the drywall. I'm looking for a relatively easy way to transform them.

After reading this post:
https://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/walls/tongue-and-groovey-33489046?se=wkly-20171202&slg=17c915ba33bf065ef00b1a28dcafdecb-26860190&post_position=8
I'm inspired!!!

First question: do you think the mirrors would stay in place (not break) if I use tongue and groove vinyl flooring with adhesive to glue them in place?

Do you think the adhesive will properly dry if applied to mirrors?

If you all think the mirrors may break doing this, how can I achieve the same look without needing things such as a table saw, nail gun, etc. I do have hand tools. I don't want to have to build a stud wall, break into the floor tiles, etc.

As always, thanks so much for your thoughful and creative advice! icon

Wow I know these have to be quite an eyesore in today’s lifestyle! Here is a tutorial on how to remove these.

The added weight of the flooring may break the mirrors of they can pull away from the wall. Best is to remove them. Breaking them and peeling them off is the fastest way. Sometimes you can use a wide putty knife and get behind them and gently force them off. You can cut through the adhesive using the piano wire or any rough wire. Have some help around and wear safety equipment.

And be sure to run a lot of tape across the surface of the mirrors in several directions in case it breaks so you don't get severely cut.

  • I would remove them. A glass company can come and do it for you.

If you truly hate them... just bite the bullet and take them out... SAFELY.. of course.. any thing attached to them could break them or pull them down...

Once they are down you can cover the walls with drywall and do whatever you want there.

What you could do is cover them with fabric like wallpaper. Soak fabric in liquid starch, wring it out and apply to the mirrors. Peels right off when you decide to change it or remove the mirrors.

Ha! Great minds think almost alike! I was considering a heavily textured wallpaper. Do you think that would stick to the mirrors???

Peel & stick wallpaper. Use plank design like salvaged wood at bottom akin to wainscot, different coordinating design above it. When that's complete, add a vinyl light weight peel & stick molding strip (white or paint) over seam & if desired, a peek & stick wallpaper border above molding &/or at ceiling. This is easy to do. Costs some but less than actual remodel to remove & repair wall damage. Amazon has many designs to fit most every taste.

Thanks, Gail! That's precisely what I was thinking of regarding the wallpaper.

Great idea with the wall paper. Yes it would stick.

William, do you think I should put some kind of primer or something on the glass prior to applying the wallpaper?

lso, should I stick (LOL!) with a peel and stick choice rather than a paper that is pre-glued eWilliameWilliameWilliam

imho, I think I should stick with the self-sticking type. My concern is that as I live alone, am short and the mirrors go to the ceiling that I may end up with just an expensive mess with bubbles and creases everywhere.

I know! How about coming to help me lol!

    how about a wall mural?

  • William William on Dec 04, 2017

Go with the peel and stick. Smooth out from center to edge. If you get some bubbles pierce them with a needle/pin and smooth. You can caulk the seams in the mirrors and use a wet finger to smooth them out level. You can wrap the peel and stick around the metal edges. OOOH! Florida sounds great, but with Christmas coming my family wouldn't understand.
