Would wood on this wall to match or compliment the floor look good?

I would just do the area in the middle. Had you thought about painting it?

I would go with a narrower shiplap in the same or lighter stain on the left and right sides of the main wall. The center wall could handle a larger tv, but keep it low so people don’t strain their necks looking up. I think the flag needs a frame, but a narrow one. The gray lower cabinets might pop with shiplap, but if they don’t, you may need to go with beige or brown.

You can make the open area look cozier with a big area rug, and set up a small table on one side for two people to share coffee or tea. On the other side, set up a reading area for one or two with a good lamp. Or, for one of the sides, set up a nice table for four to play cards or board games, but not so large players can’t reach at least half way across. Each of the side areas needs a smaller area rug. The flag is wood. I’ll attach a photo. It is spectacular, and a veteran makes them. The tiny TV is a 65” TV. would need a bank loan to go larger. ha! But that’s the scale of this large opening.

My idea would be to stay away from the the dark wood tones. Something like beadboard would match nicely with your country feel. It could be painted any color you would like (I kind of like it white). I agree with what someone else wrote. A nice rug would make the room cozier. It would anchor the furniture so the room doesn't seem so big, right now the two pieces look a bit lost. Plus you could bring the pieces closer together since the rug creates an "area".

You could look into other surface covers for the wall too, tin is a great look, stone there are lots of ways to add texture to the area. With the shelves you don't have to cover everything. Right now the room seems a bit sparse of color and hard. Toss a couple of plants on the shelves and I think you'll see an immediate change.

My personal opinion is there is a proportion problem with the shelves. The TV is low and smaller than the flag. I'd try putting something behind the TV or find something tall to put beside it. The top shelves need something. There is a sameness to the shelves. I have been in charge of displaying items and the big thing is to have pops of color and different levels. Here's an example, you have clusters of pictures, raise one in the back up on decorative box. That breaks up the similar heights. Put another cluster on up on a higher shelf on the other side and for this one prop a picture up on any old box but grab a scarf or grandmas handkerchief and create a little tableau for the pictures. Put a duck on a mirror or if it's a framed mirror put it behind one of the ducks. The wall will disappear if what is on the shelves becomes more eye catching.

I'd paint behind the bookcases first. See how that added color breaks up the long stretch of wall. Paint is easy to change - adding wood is not. Varying the height and space between items should also give it more interest. Everything is very linear as shown by the 3 items of equal spacing on each of the shelves on the left. Add more items. Change the spacing.

I'd suggest shiplap in either a 6" or 8" width in a satin finish White. Or, there's a wonderful Valspar color: Oyster Pearl that would absolutely look wonderful with both the cabinets and floors. It's a soft white with a sandy undertone. I love it and have used it here in my Florida home. Every color you put with it looks awesome. Best of luck.

Why not paint the wall behind the shelves with an accent color? THis will make them and the wall “pop”. You could paint behind the tv with either a slightly darker or lighter shade of same shade.

What pretty cabinetry. I would do a white stain on shiplap horizontal wood in all 3 wall spaces. I did something similar on the wall and I love it.

Divide and conquer! Make at least two seating areas...maybe one for watching tv and another for eating, a play area, reading, whatever. Don't be afraid to place couch in the middle of the room with something behind it....a sofa table, bookcase, etc. I'm afraid putting wood on the wall will darken the room too much. Paint is your friend! If you hate it, you can paint over it!

A little touch would look fabulous - but not too much. It looks great as it is. BTW, I feel for you going through what you did--- hang tough.

I would paint that wall a dark color. Like a Navy blue. And maybe a wall opposit of windows but connected to the wall pictured, the same dark color. You would be amazed how darker colors work on shrinking a space. I would lighten the cabinets to a khaki color (but not pale) an add an lighter tone area rug. Use the area that is missing drawers to store floor cushio pillows. They have them at Pier1. And mount the TV
