If the table is wood, it is advisable to use a tile barrier otherwise the wood will buckle from the water in the mastic. There is now a roll out tile barrier that will not add significant to the top. Once down, you tile as you would a floor or wall. You will need to decide what to do with the edges as they will be raw exposing the side of the tile and the wood table. I've added a tile edging and a wood band. Metal is also nice. Note: your table top will be higher than a normal table height of 29 to 30 inches.
I tiled a top to a trestle dining table 35 years ago, and a trestle coffee table my dad made. Both have lasted for years so far and we didn't do anything special to it at all... just put the tiles right on the wood with thinset and grouted them the next day.
