Rules and fashions change, even in Christmas decorating. I believe there are three main ways to style a garland or ribbon in a tree. 1. Start the garland at the top, and place it in spirals around the tree. If you are using two different colors, spiral one in wide swaths, then the second in between the other spiral. 2. Horizontal lines of garland can make your tree look fuller. They especially help if your tree is in a corner and you can’t decorate the back side for some reason. In this case, you start at the bottim row of branches, near the wall at one side. Run the ribbon or garland around the curve of the tree, near the end of the branches, to the opposite side of the tree. Reach behind the next row of branches with the ribbon, hiding the vertical step up among the branches. Then run the next row of ribbon across, up behind the end row, back across, until you finish the last row of branches at the top. Use a large top for the tree, and ornaments in between the garland.
3. The last main way to place a garland or ribbon on a tree is from the top down. The current style is to use a wide ribbon with wire down both edges. Don’t cut the ribbon until each length is completed. Crimp the top of the end of the ribbon roll. Twist the end around the center of the top row of branches. Make a loose loop of the ribbon down to the second row of branches. Tuck the bottom of the previous loop into the second row of branches. Make the next loose loop and continue with tucking and looping. Then crimp the bottom of the last loop. Cut the ribbon below the crimp, and tuck in the last edge. Continue with more rows of ribbon until the tree is in a pleasing shape. Vertical rows of loops of ribbon make the tree look taller and fuller, and the tree can be placed in a corner or out from the wall. Almost any topper can sit where all the crimps are clustered at the top of the tree. 😇
