That's where cat deterrent and repellent sprays come in handy. Go to a pet store and check out the different products for this problem, there are many choices. You spray where you don't want the cats scratching. Also, I have scratching posts in every room except bathrooms and kitchen. Good luck.
Have a t one big cats catching post in the house. It is a natural instinct for a cat to stretch, scratch and sharpen their claws. Then try a cardboard one like this:

If they take to it, I have even seen them in Dollar stores. Have a couple on hand.
Get a good scratching post and rub cat nip all over it.
By having the cats front claws removed by a vet.
Good Luck!! I have 5 cats, all rescues, and every one of them likes scratching in a different place nor are all of them attracted by cat nip.... and the repellants I have tried have not worked... neither have spray bottles, fly swatters, or thrown shoes. I have tried, jute rope, carpet, cardboard (gets peed on), real wood tree stumps. and they still scratch on the furniture.
We once had a cat who scratched the furniture when he WANTED to be pitched out side.
Hope you find a solution.
The cat repellents, mentioned above, have worked the best for us. Wishing you the best.
My kitten, Boo is just getting started with that - so I have bought a small spray bottle filled with water and when I catch her, I lightly spray her with water. I just bought a scratching post too like others mentioned in this thread - hoping that will help too!
If it is an indoor cat, you can clip its nails. If it is an inside/outside cat, it needs its claws. Des Kitty have a scratching post?
soft claws. think fake fingernails for cats. worlds largest on line retailer should have them, there is a pet specialty catalog on line foster and smith.
get its nails cut
They need to scratch it is natural. Do they their own furniture they can use? If so try sprinkling cat nip on it to encourage them to use that.
They sell scratching boxes at Walmart/ pet stores, this will draw the cat to scratch there and having a scratching post tree should stop it, they need their our scratching area. Trim the nails.
The only thing that I've found greatly reduces it is a Felaway Pheromone plug-in.... its those good feeling scents that cats rubbed their checks on your furniture and you. Sentry makes one now at half the price. I get them at the Pet Mini Mart. I also regularly trim nails with a nail clipper, and keep several scratching boards and posts around.
