How to clean upholstery

Bought a nice sofa from a home with a dog and cat. I didn't notice the amount of hair and dirt until we got it home. How do I clean it? Don't want to spend more money on a professional cleaner.

  • Vacuum it! Hopefully your vacuum cleaner has attachments. I have a lot of pets and have a rubber brush that it is easy to collect pet hair. A sticky paper lint rollers from any dollar store will work well too.

If you are looking long-term, Hoover makes a great upright bagless vacuum cleaner just for pet hair/fur. It really works. I got mine at Kohls for half price and had a 30% off coupon----- what a deal!

A good vacuuming, using a furniture attachment can help, then a slightly damp sponge (cheap one like for doing tile or washing cars) or a lint roller.

Use the crevice tool with your vac. at close quarters. It will take a while but be worth it, then sprinkle it with shake and vac and leave it (well until you finish the rest of the house )overnight if possible, that will take out any residue of animal smell, then Vac it off. and you should be ready to go.......

Thank you everyone. I feel like it needs a solvent to clean the fibers too.
