It is above 4 feet off the floor, on the dining room wall which is opposite of the living room. I used to see them in capes between kitchen and living rooms.

i rember a house i was in when i was quite young.. there was a pass thru about that size..a wooden cover would fold outward and down for serving food in the dining room. chains on the sides held it level.

You can remodel the opening with a new countertop, some bar stools and "tadah" a new breakfast/coffee bar is born.

But the dining room is the only 'eat in' area we have, it is an old house and constructed weirdly (is that a word?)

I'm trying to get my husband to pull a "TOWANDA" and OPEN our area even MORE. If it's not a load-bearing wall, OPEN IT UP!

Turn it into a bar . Nice wood and some pretty brackets

Did you want this to be a permanent closure or might you be thinking about a window that you could close or open? Maybe a removable panel? Is there a wooden frame around the opening? Are the walls on both sides painted drywall?
