I love to use old road maps in my crafts and decorations. I love the vintage paper that they are printed on and the lovely muted colours they come in.

Old road maps are normally easy to find, the chances are you or your elderly relatives will have a stash at home they no longer use. You can often pick them up at charity/thrift shops fairly cheaply.
The other thing I used for this craft which made it super speedy was a circle squeeze punch like this one here. (You can cut circles by hand but it will be a lot more time-consuming).

I also used bakers twine and a glue stick.
Using the squeeze punch, punch out circles from your map. (or cut by hand). You will need six for each ornament and then at least 10 ornaments for your garlands so at least 60 circles.
Don't worry if your maps are only printed on one side you will only see one side of the map.
Fold all the circles in half to form semi-circles. If your map is only printed on one side make sure the print is on the inside of the semi-circles.
Apply glue to the outside of one side of the semi-circle and glue it to another. Then do the same again until you have 6 semi-circles one on top of each other.
Carry on until you have about 10 of these paper spheres.
Open out your map circles to form a sphere you will have 2 bits that haven't been glued. Before gluing them together lay the baker's twine in the crease and then glue them shut.
Decide how far apart you want the paper ornaments on your garland and then glue the next one in place. Carry on until you have a map garland to the length you want.
I love my map decoration and as the maps I used, have a lot of red and green in them I've hung them with my Christmas decorations. You can make the map garlands special by using maps of your favorite places.
