Get More Storage Out of a Microwave Cart

This microwave cart was just a big space, with very little chance for good, organized storage. I decided to put a shelf in it.
First I emptied all the stuff out of there.
I had an old beat up shelf that had been in a tv stand and cut it to fit the width of the microwave stand. It is approximately 4 inches less deep than the stand which is perfect, as I can see and handle the stuff on the bottom much easier than if it were the whole depth.
The shelf was pretty ugly, so I covered it with some contact paper. You could use any design that suits your fancy for this. I chose the marble look to cover this shelf as well as the bottom of the drawer.
I installed little L-shaped brackets, two for each side. It's kind of tricky getting a good measurement in a small space like this with a builder's measuring tape so I devised a hack....
I marked the placement of the brackets using painter's tape on a small level. Not only did I get an even job done on both cabinet walls, but they are also level. Bonus!
Here it is partly filled with stuff, then I got to thinking that I could take advantage of the space left by having that narrower shelf in place.
With two Command hooks and some command tape, I set up a place for my microwave cooking lid on one door, and some plastic bags on the other door.
Thanks to Hometalker Shawna Bailey of West Orange NJ for this idea!

And here is the finished project from the front. So much more stuff in there, including some extra wine glasses.icon
