What Can I Do With This Wall?

We have been doing some spring re-decorating in our apartment. The biggest challenge is this huge wall in our living room. It is 15 feet long. We live in an apartment so painting it is such a hassle. Does anyone have some alternative ideas to decorate this wall and add a little color? Thanks!

you could use wall decals or clustered picture frames

DollarTree often has nice wall decals for a whole dollar (sorry, can't help myself) which you can use with a picture grouping. Also, they sometimes have fake plants. A big fake plant, or real if you don't have Plant Killer in your name as I do, beside your TV stand could look nice. Or...wall between TV & bench could use a huge black & white unframed canvas photo blowup of one of your favorite landscapes with smaller black & whites scattered across the rest of the wall. Walgreens almost always seems to have photo options on sale. Or do them in color, but that might drive you nuts.

I'm on a roll (bumpy, maybe, but it's a roll) An often forgotten technique is fabric and starch! Find yourself a lovely (washable) fabric to hang floor to ceiling behind the TV. The starch (liquid, not spray) is used to adhere the fabric to the wall. When it's time to move, you peel the fabric off and use a wet rag to wipe the starch of the wall. I've never done it, I've seen it when completed and it can be stunning.

And (while I'm here!) use the coffee table to get some color in there! You have a divided drawer with a glass top. Bright magazines in one section? A couple of much-loved books in one section? Scattered color photos in one? Use it to showcase your pretties that you don't want folks to handle. If you have any pretty plates then using the table to show them off would be nice, especially if you paint the bottom of that drawer a color that will show them off.

To add to what Lorna said, in the coffee table you can line with beautiful fabric or scrapbook pages to add some color to the room. For the wall find a large beautiful frame that you like and paint chalkboard paint on the glass or replace with wood and put up your favorite quotes and change it out periodically. It makes a great conversation piece. Add small shelves around it to display your favorite things.

LOVE Barbie's idea about the favorite quotes! Dollar Tree has wall decals that are quotes, too!
  • You could hang fabric from curtain rods from the very top of the ceiling to 'frame' the wall and the window. you need some height on the wall and storage? think about looking for cheap shelving units at garage sales and thrift stores and paint them a color you love and put on each side of the tv and maybe even put a board across the top connecting them with some trim to make them look sort of built in. Use baskets and containers that you paint, cover in fabric, or buy that give some fun color in the room. You could even think about painting the tv stand to match too. another option would be to find frames of all different sizes and shapes and spray paint black and find pictures of fave memories, flowers, pets, family that you love to create a gallery on each side of the shelving units. Just some thoughts. good luck!

I love the fabric ideas I'm seeing. Also you need a tall plant in front of that unsightly plug-in. Maybe an area rug to add some color? Your furniture, walls, and floor all seem to blend together. Colorful pillows will help also.

Depending on the size of your wall and budget, I would first center and put up a faux rock wall, shelving attached on both sides, crown moulding on the outside of the shelving, mounted tv, with a small shelve underneath it and you could always add underneath the tv a small electric fireplace..this seems like a lot, but if you can do the work yourselves, it is not going to cause you that much and it will look beautiful..

Don't know what your budget is. Dry-strippable wallpaper is an option to make it a feature wall. There are usually discount bins. No end of patterns. No end of colours. Quick and easy to put up and take off if you move . I like grouping plants of various kinds and types to soften edges and provide coziness. The artificials look pretty good now. I get mine on discount, yard sales, etc. Once, I found 3 large ones that had been set out in the garbage. Try to find some discarded plywood. You can get paint remnants cheap/free and make your own abstract art. Blast of colour can also be injected with cushions or a throw for the sofa. You can often get some good ones at the thrift stores, yard sales. Spray paint your stand-up lamp. Ask parents, friends' parents, etc. if they have anything they are thinking of getting rid of. This can be a good source for getting neat things for decorating.

My husband and I lived in a 595 square foot apartment for our first 4 years of marriage. I bought Black bookcases at Walmart and mounted them on top of each other -floor to ceiling and made great storage space for everything including CD player and sea-grass baskets full of all those things you can never find room for in an apartment. Go Up!

First of all have you thought of mounting the TV to the wall? Currently everything in the room is near the same height. Add a patterned fabric to the windows. Select a complimenting fabric for pillows. As suggested, take advantage of the coffee table to add color or texture. Sand and shells are very inexpensive. Mix in a few family photos and you have an interesting collage. As for adding color to the walls: Purchase inexpensive picture frames and use the leftover fabrics that you chose for the window treatments and pillows. Disassemble the frames and wrap the back part, typically cardboard with the fabric. Re-assemble them and hang them in a collage filtering in with some small wall candle sconces. The sconce alone adds color from the candle which can be easily changed out. Add a few colorful accessories and a colorful area rug be it patterned or plain.

you need HEIGHT and "LIFE" 2 must haves in every room. For that big wall it should be big,,,, either a tall bookcase on the left and a tall plant on the right..... centered about the tv something large, or a grouping of small items to make a big focal point all combined by matching colored frames, or photos, all flowers, pets outdoors, vacations etc. As for the LIFE ,,,,each room needs something living,, a tree, a few tall branches in a vase, artwork with plants, flowers, animals, etc..or maybe a collection or seashells, potted plant(s) living or fake, an animal (faux) throw or rug, or something with activity..... it makes a room feel like someone LIVES there.. these 2 tricks can take a space from stuff to feeling like its a home that YOU live in..

You have been given lots of great ideas. Here's another: Hang multiple posters in a straight line all the way across the wall. Hobby lobby has great ones. If you're willing to be patient, and make mulitple trips, you can print off or have sent to your phone the 40% coupon. Get a friend(s) to do the same thing and you can get mulitple prints and frames quickly--or wait until they run a 50% off on posters and get them all at one time. Hobby Lobby does this about every 6 weeks. This will give you tons of color and personalty, can be easily moved to your next place, is fairly inexpensive, and really easy.
