Temperature for unoccupied house

I will be closing on a home on Friday but it won’t be occupied for another month. I live in MI where the weather is in the upper 20’s. All I need to do to the home is paint the living room. Since the house will be empty for a month, is there a certain temperature that I should keep the thermostat set on? Thank you for your help!

My first husband was in that business and he always recommended 55 degrees, but this article says 5- degrees so that's what I'd use. Times have changed since he recommended that 35 years ago. :) Wishing you the best.

      Linda,

Thank you for your kindness. I have met some very wonderful people on this site and have learned so very much in such a short time. I think by getting this “bread and butter “ home and working on it will help me through this extremely difficult time.

      Please keep in touch.

If you will be in the house or someone painting, it will need to be above 60 degrees for painting.

Oye! I did the same thing (leave a house empty while selling it and one day the basement flooded and nobody noticed for weeks. Set the temp so that pipes do not freeze and burst if that is a possibility in your area. 55 degrees is fine but maybe someone can st by every few days and check?

  • 55 if the house is empty, or warm enough so your pipes do not freeze. If you will be painting, I would bump it up to at least 65.

    • You are most welcome! We are all glad to help and save you headaches down the road. It certainly is less expensive to keep the house the correct temperature than have to deal with frozen or burst pipes or worse!

I agree with the above comments. Anywhere between 55 and 60 should be fine.

Thank you for the information! My husband passed away unexpectedly 3 weeks ago and I am totally lost when it comes to things like this.
