I have given away Pots of Gold, or glass jars filled with warm lights and potpourri, for years. I can never seem to hang on to one for myself. They are a beautiful eye catcher and at the same time fill the room with holiday aromas. They make wonderful gifts that tell your friend or loved one you had them in mind when you made it. If you know their favorite holiday aroma and combine that with their favorite color, you have a sure to please inexpensive gift to give! They are the perfect home made gift because they do not take long to put together. First gather the few materials you will need.
I bought some potpourri at Walmart, but if you save our rose petals and other dehydrated flowers you can add your own oils to make potpourri. Also you will need 30 to 50 lights. I use a smaller string for a half gallon jar. Then find a small bit of holiday festive material and a small ribbon to tie it on. The gallon jars will use an entire bag of potpourri, I used only half a bag of what you see here for the half gallon pickle jar.
Put in the light string and test it to be sure it works. Then add the potpourri.
Cut a piece of cloth just large enough to cover the top. The aromas will come through the cloth with the aid of the warm lights to fill the room with holiday smells of cinnamon, pumpkin, or apple pie depending on the oils you add to the flower petals.
The lights shine brightly in the room but not when the camera flash goes off, so here is a photo without the flash to show there are lights all through the potpourri.
I tied on the cloth with a small ribbon and added the tied bow. The jar is really festive and pretty with the lights shining out of it. I call it a pot of gold because it shines so brightly and smells so wonderful.
