Sometimes you find you have an odd shaped gift or difficult shape to wrap and need a bag for it. This project will save you making yet another trip to the store if you have wrapping paper and a little ribbon or cord. Yarn would even work if you do not have ribbon. I keep colored parachute cord on hand in my craft supplies.
You will need paper, scissors, tape, about 18 inches to 2 feet of ribbon for each bag, and a rectangular piece of cardboard for each gift bag. Fold the paper in thirds to meet in the middle and tape it together. I use 3 pieces of tape or more. The photo with the supplies shows the paper already folded in thirds to meet in the center to be taped. I overlap about an inch.
Make the Bottom: Fold the bottom up using about 1/4 or less of the length of the paper. I folded the bottom up 3 to 4 inches. This will be your flat bottom when you are done. Open the bottom and fold in the sides like you do when wrapping a box.
The bottom opened and folded in will start the bottom. Now fold the upper part down to the center and the lower part up to the middle so they meet and tape them together.
The upper folded down and the bottom folded up will have a crease in it. Close it and tape it shut. I use a full length piece of tape to seal it well. This is the very bottom of the bag.
This photo shows the upper creased down and the bottom creased up but still open. I closed it to tape it shut to form the bottom of the bag. After you tape the folded upper and bottoms together and seal them well, put the rectangular piece of cardboard inside the bag to help stabilize it.
Fold the top of the bag down and use a single hole punch to make a place for the ribbon or cord to go through to tie the bag shut. You now have your own gift bag! If they are handled gently, you can save them to use again. If not, you have not thrown away $3 or $4 on a bag. This costs pennies on the dollar.
