How to frame out this picture to look nautical and correct?

I painted these pallet boards and arranged but it just doesn't look right.I have started painting the room color on boards.The painting of boards isn't right either.The pictures size is 16" in height by 12"width , thickness of1/4" seems it's a very,very hard fiber board.Maybe use rope around it?

A rope, some glass and or wooden floats... a piece of drift wood, a shell or 2....set it on a shelf with an interesting bottle or small lamp..
cut some of the boards back and add your desired decorations
I like the idea of the boards, but I think the color is too bright/dark for the picture and the arrangement of the boards draws you eye away from the picture as well. If you like the boards, I'd suggest a lighter color, closer to the sky color in the picture and I'd even the boards up on both sides so they don't draw the eye away from the picture. I agree with Linda! I don't like the look of the staggered boards. Looks too busy and detracts from the picture. Instead of staggering the boards, use the same layout but make them all even all around the picture to act as a frame. Leave different sized gaps between them as you have in the photo. The color is alright but consider lightly dry brushing some brown over the blue to bring focus on the picture. You can glue some sea glass, starfish, sea shells sporadically on the "frame". But not too much.
Hi. I'm an artist in Westport. I have "framed" out my paintings in heavy duty jute rope available at home depot. It's very thick. I use gorilla glue glue sticks (I've only found them at wally's world LOL) and it is great if you have someone help wrap the rope around the corners. It's THICK rope. Looks great when finished. I have a lot of driftwood so I've used panel nails and glue sticks to use as a frame as well by gluing and nailing the pieces to the edge of the boards. I also use lath strips (the thin wood strips used in snow fencing) and face nail them around the edge of the painting. I leave mine outside so they weather, but you can buy a bunch at home depot in the garden department for like $15 and lightly hit them with watered down paint or stain to match your painting. It's going to look great! I wouldnt do anything too fussy or people will be looking at your boards instead of your painting
maybe add some seashells, rope and driftwood, keep the boards.
It needs a simple frame. Your boards make it too busy as the painting is busy itself. You are detracting from the picture.

Two ways - use driftwood as framing material or use a wooden frame in a light color that is distressed to look like it has been out in the weather.
Love her idea re:driftwood. .I like what you did but to me its to matchy, matchy. And the frame needs to be bigger around the pic, more about your room and less the pic. Pick a small color out of the pic not blue and use that for a frame color. I like the driftwood color. Good luck
