You can buy thin sheets of covering that looks like tile to put over it. You just cut it to size and Liquid Nail it to the existing paneling.

Hi Linda. You should be able to prime them with a good oil base primer and then paint if they are a wood paneling. I have done this. I would just make sure not to have too much moisture in the air (if using shower) while in the process of doing it. I would also get a good paint that is good for bathrooms and handles the moisture better.
