Tops and pants by color. Then break down as to sleeve length. Evening wear in one group. Consider moving racks so that you have a high one and a low one. Thin out what you are not using.

I would definitely do a high and a low rack and move formals you don't normally wear to bins or into another closet

When I read your question my first thought was hardware changes. Other answers you received were aimed at rearranging your closet. I'd like to know what you have and what challenges you are facing.

Two rods, shirts and pants - floor for shoes or boxes. I love the hanging shelves personally

First, you need to determine just how much, and what kind of storage you REALLY need. More or better hanging storage, for long stuff or shirts and skirts? Do you need more folded storage, like for sweaters, jeans, t-shirts, etc.? Is your shoe storage needs for heels or athletic shoes or boots?

Next... take some graph paper and map out the dimensions of your closet (no rods or shelves, yet) how tall, how wide, how deep, where the door is. make a front view and an end view and a top view. Start researching closet organizers, storage options, sites like Pinterest.com to get ideas.. and print off pictures of the things and dimensions of the organizers you want to buy or build.. you will need this info when you start the actual planning of your new closet.

Photo copy the "base" plan (so you don't have to do it over and over)...

Now, plot out the "areas" of storage on a separate sheet of graph paper: for example: long hanging: 2 ft W X 5 ft H, short hanging: 60 in W X 42 in H,

folded storage: 36 in X 36 in, open shoe storage ___W X 14 in H... boxed shoe storage... etc. Cut these "shapes" out of the graph paper... I would color them with different shades of highlighter.... NOW... start planning your new closet..place the shapes in the base plan... photo copy each new arrangement... then change the plan and photo copy again... TRY everything... sometimes the last thing you thing will work... does!

Once you have your new plan... take everything out of the closet, rods, shelves, every thing... Paint, Wallpaper, what ever you want... then start installing the new stuff.

Also... before you put stuff back into the new closet.. determine if you have worn it in the last 2 years... if not..(unless it is a mink coat) it is out. And you might want to make a new rule" 1 in...1 out... anything new come in... something like it goes out (maybe a blouse you don't really like, etc.. or an old pair of tennies)... I did and my closet is doing just fine... really !

Here is one idea for folded stuff, in the bin or not (2 stacked..Closet Maid 36 in T X 36 in W X 12 in D) and there was enough room at the end for 2 hanging shoe storage units.

I'm Not trying to be funny, but first go through the closet and throw or give away everything you can. Then you will have some ideas! Always works for me. Nancy

Start by purging things you have not worn in a year, then add dollar pouches along the sides and back wall for shoe storage and scarfs, this free up a lot of space. Only keep current seasonal clothing items in your close, I use two closet in out home to keep rotating seasonal clothing and I turn the hanger the wrong way because at the end of the season the items that are still turned wrong are the ones that are being donated. Another rule of thumb in our home is because we are shoppers that every time I buy something new I get rid of two things this keeps me from think oh I’ll wear that next year... NOT 📌🎄
