It would cost more than I paid to send it out be cleaned professionally.

I am a fan of water extraction carpet cleaners, like the Bissell cleaner I've owned since 2003. At the time it cost less than a nationally advertised chain wanted to do all of my carpeting before I moved in. Would they do a better job? Possibly. Did the Bissell do a job that I was satisfied with? Sure did. I don't know how people who have carpeting in their homes get along without one.

    • I had one of those! They work very well! Having 6 cats, 6+ dogs, a canary and a dragon, I get my carpets cleaned every 3 months, but if I didn't have all the pets it would be all anyone would need. Mine died being shuffled back and forth between 3 households - looking to replace.

  • Purchase, rent or borrow a carpet cleaner. I have all my area rugs done when I have the carpets cleaned. I had a Bissell that Ken mentioned, and got a lot of heavy use over the years. Looking to replace.

I have successfully power washed acrylic carpets. The trick is to have a floor or patio for it to dry completely.

Call a local reputable carpet cleaner to ask if they will offer a discount if you bring the rug to a job site when they are already set up for steam/hot-water extraction cleaning. (If so, pre-vacuum, then roll it up to transport. Roll it up after it has been cleaned, bring it home, and unroll it to dry on a hard surfaced floor, just not on wood.) Hopefully you will get an excellent cleaning at a great price!

Like everybody here I'm always looking for the bargain. I'm seeing the latest incarnation of the Bissell Pro-Heat for under $200. I'm sure that spending some time checking around you could knock at least $50 off for a refurb. There is a model without heat available on Amazon for $80.
