What kind of flooring for my kitchen?

Yes, it can be installed to look quite nice if done in perhaps a darker complimentary color &/or have planks running in a different direction. This would also be conducive to creating a designer pattern within the wood floor. Example, inset a section of wood flooring size & placement akin to a rug placement. However, a darker complimentary wood flooring should look fine butting up to tiles & a wood bridge piece where the 2 floors meet may be the little trick to making this work that you like better.

A piece or 2 of laminate in similar color you wish to use to place next to tiles might help you to decide just how you wish the finished flooring to look.

Choose a complimentary color with the other flooring.Run the floor in the opposite direction. When choosing flooring just like paint it is best to get samples and see what looks appropriate in your home.

the biggest issue of butting the wood flooring up to the porcelain flooring is the difference in the thickness of the two products...if they are not the same, it will be tricky getting a non hazardous transition in between the two rooms. If your floorplan is not an open floor plan and the thicknesses are the same having differing products/colours can work quite successfully

I think the floor looks fine, very nice kitchen! About your Yorkshire terrier you have to train him/her. We rescued a Llasa Apso last year and it took me a few months to train him because he was peeing everywhere. My cockapoo also had separation anxiety and now doesn't go in the house. Good luck :)

I have 12 inch tiles in my kitchen that are brownish in color and hardwood floors in the living room and dining room that open up to the kitchen and they look real nice. There is a slight difference in height between the kitchen and bathroom, but a somewhat narrow metal strip transitioned it without a problem. We have a different tile in the room on the other side of the dining room that also had a slight difference, but again a metal strip transitioned it and both of the strips blended in real well, they are hardly noticeable and you will forget they are even there if the color difference blends in and isn't too stark.

Use the same color tones and purchase a threshold that matches the new wood color. Available at big box stores

I would just continue with the wood-look tile in the rest of the house to keep the flow and consistency.

You could also do a travertine-look vinyl plank floor in the rest of the house . . . very water resistant for your little friend, and would look nice against the wood plank look.

seeing only one view of your kitchen you don't mention if it is a doorway or completely open floor plan. if it is a doorway the transition strip is not a big deal. if it is an open floor plan with no walls get some samples and find what you like. go to a store that does floors and get someone to come to your house to measure and give you options. ?? hope this helps.

You can absolutely use a different flooring in the other rooms. Most of the installers will try to use the metal strip to transition the different flooring. We had wood flooring in the kitchen and carpet in our family room. I would not let the installers put the metal strip down (I felt it looked cheap.) The company we purchased the flooring from agreed to install a real wood transition strip that matched our floor perfectly. I had to stand firm on the matter but was so happy I did! The metal would have looked terrible!!!

We pulled the carpet in our house (all of it) several years ago because we have pets too. Best thing we did in a long time. If you are concerned about the floors being cold after replacing the carpet consider throw rugs. They not only make the floor a little warmer but they tie rooms together or help make designated areas. So much easier to keep clean.

You can always take a photo of the two spaces, and then use digital manipulation to see how the new flooring will look. I've done this with outdoor trim, throw rugs, even sewing patterns. Plenty of easy apps that will let you select an area and then fill with the new look.

your space sounds really nice. with the openings being doorways you should be able to do a transition strip that matches the new flooring and that compliments the kitchen floor. i know tile is a lot of work so you probably don't want to continue that all throughout your home. we just did our floors with solid wood last year. they are 5" boards. i like the flooring but found out after a winter season (from the customer service for the flooring product) the wider the board the more shrinkage you will notice. and it is noticeable. if you are going to do solid wood this is something to research. (ours is for wheelchair traffic) good luck in your remodel. it is nice when you get it all done and you can relax. enjoy.

we went from 2 1/2" boards to 5" boards. went from light oak to darker oak. i like the 5" boards. i think you should find what you like. you could also go with carpet again. new padding and new carpet is a quicker process. good luck with your project.

jan, you did a nice job on your kitchen. you don't need an interior decorator. you could go to a flooring store and check out the pet friendly floors. take a sample of your tile or a picture for matching. here in michigan there are carpet companies offering multiple rooms for a discounted price. look on the internet and read reviews. keep posting as you go and hometalkers will help you.

Jan this is off subject but I have to ask you what brand cabinets did you install? they look great! The whole kitchen does. I'm also wanting a stacked look and am having a time deciding on a brand. Were yours expensive?
