I work for an elementary school. Recently, I have been ill. Extra money has been going to bills. The school has been fantastic with me taking so many days off. I am looking for a DIY gift for about 10 close school friends. Something under $5 person.

Homemade hot cocoa mix in a new coffee mug was always a big hit. You can get pretty cute mugs at dollar stores, sometimes 2/$1. The ingredients for hot cocoa mix is under $10 for all, and you can fancy it up by getting dark chocolate candy bars, melting them and scooping it onto a plastic spoon and crushing some peppermint candy or candy cans on them. You would spend way less than $50 for all the materials, probably somewhere near $25-$30, and have enough to do several baggies of cocoa mix.

Mugs are a great idea. You can buy all sorts of gift bags and containers for gifts at the craft stores. You can fill with whatever your friends like, tea bags, homemade cookies, cacti plants, herb plants, candy... it doesn't have to be the same so you can make it more special!

Last year, I made travel shoe bags for a couple of friends. Here is a tutorial from Martha Stewart.

Martha used velvet. I, on the other hand, used cotton and the instructions worked fine.

My friends are all chocoholics so fudge is very popular. I use a modified version of this easy recipe.

I modify it by skipping the nuts, replacing the vanilla with orange liqueur and adding chopped dried cranberries.

Tie a pretty dollar store ribbon around a couple candles. I received that as a gift once and really liked the idea. You could get some cute Christmas ornaments to tie into the ribbon as well. There you go, about $3 per person and so thoughtful. Just remember, your friends know your story, and it's the thought that counts. I hope you feel better soon, Melissa. Merry Christmas.
