plain white toothpaste
You can try any number of salt, vinegar, baking soda, and other ingredient mixes and they may do the job for you. I would rather use a commercial product made specifically for the job since the purpose of cleaning brass is to make it look nice. Oddly enough these products are usually called "brass cleaner".

I've been using a soak in tomato juice and then wipe it off. It's just lightly acidic and works well without the harsh chemicals. Some people say Ketchup works also, but have not tried that myself.
Also, a paste of lemon juice and baking soda works also. Stay away from brillo and sand paper, it makes the brass dull.

I use Brasso cleaner
My military hubby always uses Brasso
