DIY Olive Branch Wreath

I am a complete sap for holiday movies. Sean and my boys chide me if they catch me watching any Christmas movies before Thanksgiving, but at least my daughter is on my side. She and I have been caroling around the house for a few weeks already, and sneaking movies whenever we can. Hahaha! No, I do not start decorating the house or putting lights up prior to Thanksgiving, but the spirit of the season definitely grabs ahold of me and won't let go.

One of my more recent favs is The Holiday. If you have not indulged, you should! It was this season's viewing that caught my eye. I am not sure that I ever noticed the epic olive branch wreath on Cameron Diaz's front door, but this time it had my attention whilst she was slamming it in her cheating boyfriend's face! I say "epic" when referring to the wreath, because it was HUGE and perfectly studded with ripening olives. It just screamed California Christmas, so I had to make one! I happened to have an olive tree in my backyard in want of a trim, so it seemed like destiny!

Supplies:

1 plastic or metal wreath frame
green floral tape or wire
pruned olive branches, preferably with some olive intact
clippers, to make cuts "just so"

Cut your branches into manageable sizes. Fortunately, olive branches are very pliable, so they bend around the frame with minimal effort. This is a layering job.

Start with one branch, wire it in place, and then layer another branch on top but just two inches below the crown of your first branch.

Wire the second branch in place and then follow up with a third branch, wiring it just two inches below the crown of the second branch. Continue this pattern all the way around, and then repeat if your frame is in need of more greenery.

Use the clippers to cut branches to the perfect size, and trim up leaves that get in the way of keeping the center of your wreath clear.

I love how the ripening olives add a touch of bluish black and a whole lot of texture.

This feels like the perfect California Christmas wreath!
