New Kitchen Lay Out Poll (please vote)

by Denise Boyce
I'm redoing my 83 sqft kitchen which only has a 99" run on either side of the door. I have the sink side set and thought I had the stove side set until someone suggested if I moved the stove over I'd have ONE 33" section of counter space which would be more usable instead of TWO 15" sections of almost useless space. Chime in guys, what da ya think?

Two small sections? 15" wide OR
33" of more usable space?

my former kitchen planner said to leave space on either side of the stove as a landing area if a pot starts smoking and needs off the heat immediately.

    Totally agree with Dfm.

  • Lynn Goins Lynn Goins on Dec 16, 2017

    I prefer the first one.

    2 small sections

I like the first one.. If you own this can u remove a wall? Remove the left side wall and expand your space.

It's small and neat for two responseable people it's decent but many people will not able to manage that little space

I like the first one. You can always aLes one of those small pull out racks to fill the extra space which gives you extra storage space

  • 2dogal 2dogal on Dec 16, 2017

I too like the first picture. You have no place to put things when you take them from the refrigerator. I also don't think you'll be happy with the stove against your refrigerator when cooking. It's too crowded.

I know this is a mock-up, but when you go to buy the refrigerator, make sure the door swings away from the stove.

Hinges on refrigerator doors can be easily switched to the opposite side, if needed.

I prefer the first one too

I agree with the first picture. It looks more balanced and I don't think I'd like the stove right next to the refrigerator. Splatters!!!

What about butting the stove up to the other wall and have the 33" counter space in the middle of the the fridge and stove and adjust the cabinets accordingly?

  • Mmb11064331 Mmb11064331 on Dec 16, 2017

I like the drawers in the second photo but would it definitely be too crowed with the stove next to the fridge. Your pot handles would have to swing to the center of the cooktop. You might want to think about a stack of drawers on one side.

  • Rose P Rose P on Dec 16, 2017

The first choice is a less crowded look and for all reasons above, much safer

Thanks guys! there is NO room to expand - I'm stuck with a tiny kitchen but it works for me. I've decided to split the counter per the majority. I already knew that just needed confirmation. You guys are great!

My kitchen is similar with refrigerator at the wall and a wall oven right beside it. Doors of refrig. do not open far enough for cleaning and one door dings the wall, other marred by handle of oven. So I would vote for first choice or perhaps stove pushed to far right. The larger space counter is more useful. An island counter top on wheels may be good for your space?

How about a compromise... put a small cabinet to hold cooking oil or cookie sheets in that space.. and then you can still use a cabinet that will have drawers (I have 15 inch drawer units on either side of my stove)

It will be better for your refrigerator if you put a cabinet in between it and the stove... the refrig will have to work less hard to keep cool when the stove is going. (and there will be less grease splashes to clean off the refirg.

Does anybody remember the old triangle rule for kitchens? the sink, stove and frig can be in a triangle to make work more efficient. The triangle can be equal sided or have two longer sides. Be sure to have counter space beside all of them...

    First one

  • Mark Libeck Mark Libeck on Dec 16, 2017

Kitchen designers always say to leave counter space on both sides of the stove. You can always add space with a small island. Maybe one with wheels.

    • Denise Boyce Denise Boyce on Dec 17, 2017

Thanks Mark but I have 83 sq ft. That's an 8 x 8 room with fridge stove and two sides of cabinets I only have 4 feet between the sink and stove. the other side of the kitchen is island. lol

  • Nell Nell on Dec 17, 2017

    i like the first one!

  • Laura Laura on Dec 17, 2017

The first one looks much nicer ,the second too bunched up and for safty reason # 1 is great

  • Erc31624132 Erc31624132 on Dec 17, 2017

Best look is the first, but best idea to get you more space if you want it; is the island on wheels. Use a lower cabinet or one of drawers and /or one of each to give you more storange as well. Good luck.

I agree with the majority. While your working space is small, the first one looks better. I do like the possibility of put the stove on the other side and having the larger counter top in the middle, but it might be too close to the wall. If you're working with a professional ask them. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll make it work for YOU! Wishing you the best & Happy Holidays!

The first one. I would not put the stove next to the fridge

Both the fridge and the stove are very large for this space. Are you absolutely set on having appliances this large, or are to open to having smaller?

In the UK (greetings to all our UK Hometalkers!) appliances are commonly not nearly as large as in the U.S., which gives much more counter space. Fridges are narrower, but often the net interior capacity is the same as they don't have the bulky ice makers in the doors. Also, a narrower 24" stove is not really smaller, as it still has the four burners, but with the empty space in the middle.

How many people are you cooking for in this kitchen on a daily basis? How often do you cook with large pots that fill the whole 36" width? How often do you bake with a completely full oven? How much ice do you really use on a daily basis?

Is there any way that the fridge can be moved opposite to where it is now? A counter depth fridge is shallower than the standard deep one that you have now. Perhaps it might fit?........

If you are planning to stay in this home for any length of time, I would urge you to, before making any final decisions, to reconsider the size of your appliances.

The first one . I don't like my stove right next to the fridge . so yea the first one . plus it's safer

  • Sheila Gyke Skinner Sheila Gyke Skinner on Dec 18, 2017

One larger section would be more useful but it looks much better with 2 small sections I think

  • Darlene Merritt Darlene Merritt on Dec 18, 2017

Neither is ideal ....the side of the fridge is up against the wall and the fridge door next to the wall will not open wide enough for inside to be easily accessed.

  • Debbie Debbie on Dec 18, 2017

Since the space your dealing with is small couldn't you have your 33" counter work space in between the fridge and the stove?

    • Debbie Debbie on Dec 18, 2017

Might want to try a smaller fridge also that accommodates your needs which would give more space and functionality .

  • Dee Simmons Dee Simmons on Dec 18, 2017

The two small counter areas are better. Having the stove next to the frig is not a good idea.

  • Tammy Tammy on Dec 20, 2017

The problem with having your fridge right up against the wall is that it hinders opening the door fully. I know because I have this issue.

  • Shannon Shannon on Dec 20, 2017

IF you kept both you could prepare food on one side and the other side could be are for when when the food is ready. You have a little more cabinets on the top picture than the bottom picture. I don't like my stove and oven to be that close together.... doors wise. Top picture for me.

  • Sharon Sharon on Dec 20, 2017

I would go 33" counter, but couldn't you also wrap that counter around the corner there for more surface and another cupboard over it.

And maybe if the frig wasn't so large you could get a rolling pantry between stove and frig?

  • Carolyn from NH Carolyn from NH on Dec 20, 2017

The first one, but only because you should keep your stove away from your fridge. Other wise I like the second one 😊.

    Good Morning,

I like it the way it is. When your cooking you can have all your spices in right cupboard, and have working space for food cooking on stove,

AND you can have glasses in cupboard next to fridge and a counter to set things coming and going in and out of fridge. They are both a small working area but looks balanced , i think it would looked crammed any other way. Good Luck.
