I would paint only if you are very SURE you are tired of living with it the way it is. Paint can be removed if it is well made and solid wood, however it is not cheap to have it professionally refinished. I paid $800 for just one chest type mohogany wood dresser, though it turned out beautiful. I have painted a few of my old wood pieces; my kitchen cabinets, side tables, bookshelves, and my dark wood doors. It really brightened things up? I was tired of so much dark wood. It sucks the life out of a room sometimes. I havent regretted it. Good luck.

I think you may want to give a description or a picture . If this is good wood and all matches. I say no. Clean it p with Restore-A-Finish. This painting furniture is a trend that will cease. Painting furniture should be reserved for really hideous, worn out pieces which cannot be salvaged otherwise.

If you really want to and if you are prepared to live with the changes. I have a similar dining room that is so far removed from the current style of milk paint, distressed farmhouse design, etc. but I wouldn't dream of changing it to that just because others like this style. If you like it the way it is and you want to keep it that way for sentimental reasons OR because it is still a great DR set, then just keep it! You CAN do some things to change its appearance for a temporary update--- you can buy slipcovers for the chairs; you can buy tablecloths and table runners that you can switch out, you can change the wall color/window treatments; you can update the interior of the china cabinet; etc. HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT before you do the permanent changes.

Absolutely. Wood is not always pretty. It will lift your spirit to see a fresh, pretty color. Good luck.

What condition is dining room furniture in now? Is it wooden? Is it nice wood or chipped?

Ifyou're thinking the wood is too dark, try lighter table cloths and chair covers (even pillow slips over the backs!)..first to see how it would look. A friend has grandmother's table and chairs., originally dark wood. Her mother inherited and painted lighter color to "brighten"it up.My friend inherited and spent long, hard hours and $ stripping it back to the wood. Paint colors come and go much faster than wood styles! Her daughter, the 4th generation likes the wood - phew!
