What is the biggest mistake made when first trying to decoupage?

    not letting the layers dry completely Before the next layer.

    My biggest mistake was painting the entire piece with a dark colour first...when I put the napkin I was using on, the dark colour bled through...from here on in, I will just use a light primer before doing the decoupage

      So glad u mentioned the dark paint..I can't imagine how it would have turned out if I didn't use white paint, bc the stripes are white on the tissue paper. So many great ideas. Glad I asked a question. Ty

    Make sure to apply a thin layer. I applied too much and the paper got all crinkly.

    Putting too much glue on and tearing the paper up. Patience is critical. Smoothing it out carefully to avoid bubbles, use a credit card.

    Patience, definitely. And not using too thick of a paper or fabric. It takes forever to dry, doesn't seem to adhere as well, and ends up looking like you just stuck a piece of paper to it
