If by 'sugar' ants you are referring to those very tiny ones, then just windex window spray will stop them in their tracks and keeps them away for many months.

If you have ants - after cleaning well, (I consistently wipe my counters with diluted bleach spray), try to see where they are coming in from outside and caulk all cracks, holes, etc. Keep the kitchen counters clean and dry. They come in as they are looking for food and water.

I hear that very salt water solution does the job. I prefer the chemicals though.

There is an easy way to get rid of any kind of ant that is safe for children, pets, and the environment. Best of all, it WORKS. We tried everything and an old timer told us the secret, cornmeal. Yes put out cornmeal where you see ants, especially their home mound if you can find it. Put it where you see ants and in a few days they will be gone. If you see a few ants after the cornmeal is gone, the colony is large and you may have to reapply a second time. We use Jiffy because it is sweet. One box is good for about 5 applications. I keep it on hand especially for spring time when we rid the yard moving into our new trees, potted plants, or anywhere we see them making a mound outside. They cannot digest it and it kills the nest when they take it back to the queen and colony.

diatomaceous earth (available at any garden store) works on the exoskeleton for outdoor application around doors, windows and flower beds,

indoors we use a spray bottle with plain white distilled vinegar--spray them directly and the smell repels the others
