How do I prep and what paint do I use for my brick fireplace ?

I want to paint my brick fireplace in a white distressed look - how do I prep this and what type paint would I use

I just swept mine real good to remove any dust. Then I used Kilz primer (i used water based) then semi gloss or gloss paint (latex, just like you use for your walls). it was easy & it lasted for years before I had to touch it up. Good luck.

any water based sealant(Unibond works for me) make sure this stage is completed properly otherwise your finish paint will flake and peel,then you can use any paint type you wish

not an answer, but a comment-we did not offer on a house we really liked because the owners had painted the beautiful fireplace...
Agree with Darlene - Painting it will cause issues when you sell. This came up when I was helping a young family member house hunt. Someone had painted over a wood burning fireplace. This is a great set up, in good condition. Have you considered adding a mantel and some shelving ? Crown molding? Some change in decorating would change the whole look - without painting. Just a thought. For me paint ruins the beauty of the brick.
