I have a bedroom I want to paint, some of the walls gray, medium to dark gray, but I don't want to make the room look smaller, so I was thinking just to paint 1-2 walls dark

Paint only the largest wall, more than that will draw the room in. Be careful on selecting gray colors. They tend to play blue, green and brown. Choose some paint chips and see what will work with your lighting.

  • Generally, people like to paint the wall with the headboard against it as the accent wall. In your case, maybe the wall opposite any windows would help not make the room smaller.

How about an ombre effect? Light on top as it gets darker several shades needed or white can be added to darkest color in a separate container as you reach the color you want just need more darker paint since it will be used throughout room in different hues and I would definitely have a helper cause you don't want it to dry you want it to bleed into each level as you go done and end with darkest color. But yes I agree with previous answer as light bounces off walls from the natural light or place large floor mirror to help bounce light if you only have one window. You could also choose the two smallest walls as the lighter color and the other walls in darker shade since most rooms are not perfect squares. This actually will balance a room that isn't square to appear as a square because you are bringing in two walls and expandingtwo walks it's all illusions. Just please don't pick the colors two far apart. The strip that you find perfect color on usually has the different hues on it and you can get idea as to how close or far you want so room has defined colors but not drastic color change. And remember that decor in room helps balance the color as well if you place bed on a light wall but bring I the darker color in furniture or bedding or whatever you can balance it out so room doesn't look smaller. Rugs help as well. So go for it and enjoy your space.

If you have a headboard, I'd paint that one.

As a rule of thumb, I like to use dark colors behind any video screen (computer workstation or TV). Bright colors tend to make the eyes work harder when focusing on backlit surfaces... eyestrain is a result.

I do like the previous ideas, too.
