I would contact a reputable plumbing company. I would check to see if you see signs of water everywhere, all the ceilings, all the walls, right down to the baseboards. Check any water lines that you can see for water drips. Check outside faucets that perhaps they are dripping. It could be possible that the leak is outside of the house. Finding it may be easier for a plumber than a lay person. You may contact the water department to see if they have a way of detecting leaks, especially if it is outside the house.

First contact your water provider (your city?) and ask them to send out an inspector. Before you spend any money, see if they can help you for free.

I would first check with City that they haven't had a hefty price hike, my town jump my bill double when they raised price.

If thats not the case, a plumber sounds like best bet. Check outside hose attachments for breaks or slow leaks, especially if you live in cold climate where pipes can burst from freezing if you don't have insulated covers on them, and that can slowly work its way down to the street hookups. Have you checked under house/basement for water? I would also check dishwasher hookups, those rubber hoses are notorious for drying out and cracking causing massive leaks. Water heaters would be next culprit. A running toilet can use many gallons a day, put some food coloring in toilet to check and see if toilet bowl turns the color, if so replace flapper and fill valve. Washer hookup/drain should be checked.

Here is how to find if its outside, turn off main water to house, then check to see if outside meter is still running..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ACweib5cns there are tons of videos on how to find leaks...

I'd bet on a toilet leak which can run up your bill in a hurry. Listen for toilet water to run for a few seconds many times a day as if filling after a flush. It may only need a new flapper or a new tank flushing mechanism--which most husbands can do. Investigate this before calling an outside digging company.

    A local plumber.

Call the water department first. The leak may be on their equipment before it enters the house. They can also locate leaks inside. Then you can tell whether you need a plumber or not. Could even be a simple solution you may be able to fix yourself. Don't spend the money until you know what the problem is.

Call the water department and have them check their meter, as well as the pipes between their meter and the water service entrance to your house.

Water meters can go bad, so that is where I'd start my investigation.
