Can I just paint and glitter them or do I need to do the oven to dry them out? Or can that step be skipped?

  • I don't think you want to risk any of your hard work on being ruined.

Using pine cones collected outdoors can result in mold, mildew, or creepy crawlies invading your home unless they are correctly preserved for indoor use.

Putting them in the oven kills any Critters that might be living on them. You don't have to do this step but I would recommend it.

I recommend putting them in the oven first. besides killing any bugs, the heat will open the cones.

Line a cookie sheet with newspaper, place pinecones on the paper and bake in a 150-175°F oven for about 30-45 minutes. Allow the pinecones to cool and turn each upside down and tap lightly to get rid of any thing trapped or toss them in paper bag with some table salt and give them a good shake. Then you can paint and glitter them to your heart's content. I use string wrapped around an open area in smaller pinecones to create a garland. Hope this helps. Happy holidays?

Its usually recommended to bake them to remove insects and any other outdoor mold mildew fungus.

Have you seen the bleached pinecones?

We got a large number of pine cones from a place nearby and I did bake them. I thought my daughter would want them for the wreaths she makes, but it was too late. So now I intend to use them as bird feeders for the winter, a project I will undertake after Christmas.
