Hi everyone, This is the first year in a long, long time that I decided to give a home-crafted present for Christmas. It's for my daughter & her hubby and they like things like this. So my hubby & I decided we'd do this together. He was in charge of getting the wood, sanding the wood, and putting on the handles. I was in charge of painting the gray paint, taping it and painting & seasoning the chalkboard paint. (my Inspiration was a tray from http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2016/08/diy-chalkboard-serving-tray-tutorial-youtube-video.html )
Here we go!
Supplies
Supplies
Board 2x12x24 - Lowes
Rustoleum Smoke Gray paint - Valu Home Center
Chalkboard Paint - on hand
2 Black Tray Handles - Home Depot
Foam brushes - Valu Home Center
Painter's Tape - on hand
Tack cloth - on hand
Face mask for sanding - optional - on hand
Vinyl gloves - optional - on hand

If you notice, there is Zar in the picture. We were going to stain it, but due to "technical" difficulties, we painted instead. Also the Chalkboard paint was on a "date" and missed the picture. :)

We had the board cut out of a larger piece at Lowes. Of course, the first thing we did was sand it down until it was smooth. We cleaned it with a soft cloth and then a Tack Cloth.
Hubby Sanding it down
The next step was to paint it gray on both sides. It actually took 3 coats of paint. That was my job.
Once all sides were thoroughly dried, I taped it off for the next step.
Next I painted the chalkboard part with 2 coats of the chalkboard paint and let it all dry over night, before I took off the tape. After it had dried for 7 days, I seasoned it by rubbing chalk over the whole chalkboard part, then wiping it with a soft cloth.
The last step was to attach the handles at each end. I was out when my hubby did it so there is no picture of him doing it.

Just an FYI, the time it took us is just a guess and doesn't include drying or curing time.

Here is the result.
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates this holiday!

This is a gift they can treasure for years to come - especially since both you and your husband worked on it! That alone makes it priceless...they are very lucky to have you and this wonderful made-just-for-them gift.
