I like to keep things that I wear together, together. Pants on hangers with the accompanying shirt or sweater on that same hanger -- you can get hangers that have 'shoulders' and clips for hanging pants/skirts, a sweater can be folded to drape over the straight bar

The first step is to sort and discard. If it doesn't fit or you don't wear it, either discard or store away. Women change sizes so they sometimes like to keep a variety of sizes.

Build in some double hanging, shelves, shoe racks, etc.

How big is your closet? You can have one shelf under you hanging clothes, and put a shelf over your hanging clothes. Another way is, put two clothes hangers over another and have two shelves on the bottom. As long as you can reach the top rod, you'll have more space. Try also the hangers that you have five pieces of clothing, and the drop the hanger, and your clothes will hang in a overlap position.

Recently, my husband installed a closet system he bought at HomeDepot and it looks really nice. Has a narrow piece with adjustable shelves, two drawers that goes in the center. I have two poles on the right side to hang shorter items and on the left side for hanging longer items. There are two shelves above. He also installed a unit for holding footwear. It's perfect for keeping the clothes organized.

Everyone is right about sorting through your clothes and only keeping what you need or really want.
