The heater is my only heat source and can’t afford to replace.

Please remove the wood or whatever that rectangular thing is behind the heater. That wall is a heat barrier to keep the wall from over heating and burning the house down. Hopefully, it is built to UBC- Universal Building Code. Do not do anything to it, except maybe paint it with a high heat paint. This is serious! You need to keep things away from the heater. I'd even consider removing the stockings if they feel warm.

The brick can be painted the same as the outside of a fireplace can be painted. But I’d paint the wall. I think it needs some color there. Also, you should remove anything from behind the heater. What kind of heat is that?

1, the quilt needs to be relocated, that close to heat may damage it, 2 the wooden folding table also needs relocated..it negates the fire wall / heat sink of brick./ 3, do you have a blower on your heat source? heat rises.. it was suggested to me to have a small fan pointed up to keep the warmer air circulating...and it does help. 4.you might want to put a safety barrier in

front of your heating unit. there are decorative metal screen panels available, pick your panels, ask at the home improvement store how to diy one, check some styles out on pinterst. 5. if you can, replace the quilt with a framed picture the same size as your current one, it will look more balanced, and the heat can damage fabrics.

keep any thing readily combustible like fabric/ paper/cloth away from your heater. do you have a fire extinguisher in the house? if no- get one. you want one that says a-b-c on it. it will knock down most fire fuels. read the instruction for use. my former place of employment had all employees practice with the fire extinguishers yearly. i did work at a day care, and started after the yearly fire talk. i had to go to a fire station and have one of the firemen sign me off on its use. they were very happy to do so. call them first.

this probably not the answer you would expect, but I've worked in burn units. it changes your prospective.

p.s. look up first aid for burns should the heater exterior over heat.

  • DfM is correct. I worked in an ER at one time many moons ago. May be old sayings, but they are true - "better to be safe than sorry" and "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Every house or apartment should have at least one fire extinguisher and get certified or whatever your local County recommends. The folks at the local Fire Department are way cool and there to help you.

    • I really appreciate everyone’s concern over the heater. This propane heat is not hot to the touch. Plus having a professional to let me know that there is no problem with heat causing any fire problem. Yes, I am careful not to put things too close that could possibly catch on fire should there be a proble. I just need ideas on this lousy corner.

Is that a propane stove? or wood heat?

  • Dfm Dfm on Dec 25, 2017

ah that's why it looks a bit off. have you considered a wood box cover for it? one lined with insulation and wheather stripping on the edges? old tin sign or framed piece on the cover facing the room?

  • Dfm Dfm on Dec 25, 2017

Could you find a wooden box to fit over the ac unit? The line with insulation? It would make it warmer for you...and art to face towards the room.

Hi I understand it propane and your source of heat. If you wish to dress up look into extending the brick in a lighter color. Not everyone has a furnance. Some live off grid. Add an antique looking teapot for humidity and a bucket of wood. Not that it is wood but to dress it up. Well good luck. Please make sure. To check where you buy for heat tolerance

I would start by removing everything off the walls and from around the stove. Even though it’s not a typical fireplace, I would create two mantles above the brick by adding shelves (painted Black). Paint the wall to brighten it up a bit (red?) to pull in an accent color from your room. You wouldn’t have to paint both walls completely. Just paint from the corner to about a foot from either side of the brick. Black trim to separate the red(?) area from the ceiling and walls would give an interesting geometric feature to the area. Decorate your new mantles with candles and large mirrors to bring light to an otherwise dark corner. This corner could be a real eye catcher!

Hi! If it was my place and I had a few dollars to spend I would look for a more colorful quilt to cover the a/c. The way you have it now looks temporary. Hang it as high as you can to draw attention to the beautiful high ceilings. Sew or have someone sew loops on the quilt and hang it on a nice curtain rod. This will bring it away from the a/c unit and make it look like art rather than a makeshift cover. Paint the bricks a color you like from the new quilt. Instead of the picture hang a large clock, the kind you would find at Hobby Lobby. Remove the folding tables and torchier lamp. If $ allow, get a small end table and place between the sofa and heater. You could use a folding table if necessary. Get a small lamp and place it on the table. Add a piece of greenery and a stack of books on table. Best wishes!

would you consider making a insulated box to cover it? it will keep more heat in than a quilt can.

  • Mogie Mogie on Dec 25, 2017

Be careful so you don't start a fire.

Maybe add a Mirror to the wall to reflect the light to brighten it up some. A fresh new color and a fireplace mantle or shelves would be a great idea.

i don’t know for sure but I think propane heaters like that and gas fireplaces aren’t the same as wood in that they don’t get hot all the way around them like woodstoves Do. I still think it needs some color back there and some updating in the decor unless you have a sentimental attachment to the items you have back there. Then I say decorate with what makes you happy.

    Hello,

Add a heavy wooden surround and Mantel Shelf. Maybe take the bricks down a layer? Possibly change Picture and Quilt for Large Mirrors?

Hi Gudrun, paint the heater with heat paint, you can paint the brick the same color so the heater blends a bit better. Put a mantle along the top of the brick and if possible raise the quilt and picture higher and put a tall LED floor lamp in to brighten it up.
