Making a Wind Chime Out of a Wine Bottle

I'm always looking at things and thinking how I can change it into something different. We had a bunch of bottles hanging around after Thanksgiving from sparkling cider and felt bad just tossing them. So I kept them around trying to figure out what I could do with them. I'm not quite sure when I got the idea to make them windchimes, but when the idea came to me I was bound and determined to make this happen.
Windchime from a wine bottle
I gathered items together that I would need. I used Chalk Couture transfers to decorate the bottles. I have done several of these now. The first one I finished I etched the designs on the glass with Armour Etch cream. Others I have used the Deco Art Glossy Enamel glass paint with the transfers. Both ways have worked awesome.
First things first, I had to figure out how to break the bottles in order to get the bottoms of them off to be able to make them into windchimes. I watched many different YouTube videos and tried 6 or 7 times to do the techniques each YouTuber was teaching - but unfortunately none of the techniques were working and I was just left with a bunch of cracked bottles. So I tried to be scientific about it and take a little bit from each video and put them all together to come up with my own way of breaking a bottle. And it worked! So I tried it again, and it worked again!!! So here is the video of how I broke the bottom off of the bottle which would be the first step in creating the windchime.

This is how I put it all together. Once the glass is broken off, I decorated the bottle and then assembled everything.

If you already have some of the items on hand, this project could be relatively inexpensive. Items like the Armor Etch, the Rub n Buff and the paints can be used for many projects and you use a minimal amount on one project. If you are using bottles that you already have from wine or other beverage, then the bottles are free. If you don't have bottles, you can purchase them online or at stores and they can be $1 from the dollar store and up. I added crystals to the one in this picture but you could add a wooden ball on a chain and make it less expensive. I would say that this project could be, cost wise, between $5 to $20 - again, depending on what you already have and what you use.

Really pretty ! Thanks for the tutorial on breaking the bottle : ) Just a note, you can use "seed beads" to tie on your line instead of just knotting the line. They can be used on the bottom to start the line and then in-between the gems to keep them in place on the line. It is much more secure than just a knot. : ) Plus, they look pretty! If you watch jewelry making (beading) , it will show you how to tie them in.

  • Thanks so much for the tip!
