Looking for a unique way to display your house numbers? How about grabbing some old, galvanized buckets and creating these stand-out numbers that also double as planters?
You may even have some of these lying around but if not, any metal bucket could be used for this project. After cleaning these up with a little bit of soap and water, I also used a metal brush to remove any rust that might interfere with the design.
I made a paper template of the size circle I wanted to use and simply traced the outline using pencil to create the shape on each bucket. Using chalk paint (because that's what I had at the time) I simply filled in the shape. By creating these light gray circles, the numbers will stand out better than if they were painted directly on the metal finish.
To create a template for the numbers, use your word processing program (I used Microsoft Word). I chose a simple font, typed the numbers to make them as large as I needed and printed them out on paper. I cut them out, taped to the buckets and traced around using pencil.
Again, I used black arylic paint to fill in the numbers.
I decided to add these dots around the circles. Not only does it look cute, but again, helps to make the numbers stand out. Once it was all finished, I gave these buckets two coats of clear, polyurethane to seal the paint. If you use regular, outdoor paint, this would not be necessary.

If you are adding live plants as I did, you'll want to make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket(s). I didn't have to worry about that since the 'rust' on these buckets had created their own drainage!
These now stand out nicely on their own but you could also add a solar light to shine on them at night. Depending on the climate you live in, you can add different types of plants or flowers to the buckets or change them out with seasonal decorations. Either way, you have a unique set of house numbers that are also decorative!

However you number your house DO IT! when the ambulance is trying to find YOUR address to save your life or a loved one's, is it visible from the street & at night -going by at the speed limit on your street! Forget cute unless it is prominent enough to be seen - would make a good teen service project or job/fundraiser to offer to paint ALL the neighbors numbers on the curbs in paint visible night or day, in large clear numbers. Could save lives!
