What's the best way to prepare wood paneling before painting?
It's a large room with three walls of nice varnished wood which we want to keep and paint light where we can still see the wood details.
It is not hard, just a bit messy. These links will help. Use a good quality primer like Kilz or Zinsser.

Hi, i just painted over knotty pine paneling. I just used a good paint with a primer. No sanding involved. It turned out beautiful.
First, wash down all surface area with TSP to get rid of all dirt and grease.
Next If you want to get rid of the grooves, you can fill them with wood filler (basically glue and sawdust if you want to make your own). You also want to fill in any holes or nicks to the surfaces you are planning to paint.
You can also cover your paneling with wall liner which goes up like wall paper and gives you a surface that resembles drywall.
As far as sanding goes, you want to remove the shine which could be done with sand paper or a deglosser like “NoSand”.
Don’t forget to remove any bolt on items like switch plates and outlet covers.
Tape edges with painters tape and cover your floor. I like to lay plastic or canvas on the floor up to a few inches from the wall and then lay news paper on top and tape to edge of the floor. (For a carpeted floor I do the same but use the roll of green painters paper)
Run a lint free cloth over the surface and apply Primer. You want a stain blocker type of primer. I like the Zinser brand but Kilz is good too. If it looks like you didn’t get good coverage, do a second coat.
Paint is a personal preference and as long as you do the prep work, just about any paint should be fine. You can ask your paint sales person what they have that is compatible with the primer you are using.
I hope that helps

Make sure the paneling is fully clean with soap and water. I used KILZ primer and Glidden semi gloss paint. 2 coats of primer and 2 to 3 coats of semi gloss. I didn't sand at all. It's been over 3 yrs and it has held up great. I painted paneling that was both in the living room and kitchen.
used kilz then a satin base primer paint...
