This Christmas a new client brought in his wife's family heirloom.... this wingback accent chair she was not willing to part with but needed new foam, fabric, refinishing, internal repairs the list goes on... Come see our Superior Makeover!
Here's the before photo! Honestly this photo doesn't look that bad but the finish on the legs was warn off and their family cat used the back of the chair as a scratch pad. icon
Here's the photo of the new upholstery he choose from the Superior Upholstery we retail! I personally was a bit nervous seeing him flip through our catalogs and about him choosing the upholstery for his wife's cherished piece, but when having the consultation with him I could tell he had a great eye for colour and interior design.

For this chair we needed 5 yards of fabric. There was only a little bit of scrap fabric left over.
Here's the chair stripped down to the bare bones!
I love seeing a "naked" chair ... this is where I look at how they build it and makes me want to build my own!
The next step is to chemically strip the legs and do any repairs to the structure to the chair. We hand to replace a lot of the foam.
Ta-Da! The legs we stained using Saman Waterbased Chocolate Stain Colour and sealed the legs with 4 coats of Saman Satin Water Based Varnish.
Here's an old colour swatch of Saman Stains - So sorry I can't seam to find the new one with the new grey stains they added to their collection... However ... Let's get back the product! We love love love ... (you get the point) ... Saman Stains! It's like no other stain we have ever used in our furniture refinishing shop!
Why we love it so much???

Number one... it's water based & quick drying!

Number two... odorless & eco friendly!

Number three.... does not leave lapping marks... and you don't need to use "wood conditioner" as a prep to prevent lapping marks!

Basically everything you would want and expect from a wood stain that actually delivers!

Opps! ... I forgot one thing... It's also intermixable! Which means this product is like a pigment you can intermix to create your own custom stain colour!

Another key step to this project is Superior Fabric Guard! Yes we always recommend when updating upholstery to apply Fabric Guard to their new upholstery! It's not the cheap and toxic hardware store "scotch guard" like products you can find .. this stuff actually works! It's professional grade, odorless product, eco friendly... My favorite part is.... has a great UV protector and here in the Okanagan it's a must to prevent sun damage and fading.

HOT TIP: I use this personally on all our rugs, décor pillows, interiors of a cars, shoes and purses! I like to apply two coats and massage the product into the fabric/upholstery if it moves ie. velvet or micro fibers...ect!

This project was about 20+ hrs. labor all said and done... we knew it was worth it! When our client came to pick it up and seeing the look in his eyes we just knew his wife hand goose bumps and maybe tears of joy seeing her cherished treasure repaired and re-loved.

We hope you liked seeing this Superior Makeover and please stay tuned to see what we have in store for 2018!

Please show more details of the steps you went through to reupholster the chair! I have two I'd like to do myself, luckily they do not have the tufted backs; but am nervous to try the welting! (is that the correct term for the cording on the cushions?) My other question would be, have you chalk painted chairs? Mine are a 70's peach (my grandma's) and I'd like to do them in a cream, but wonder if maybe I should go darker or will the cream cover the peach? Thanks for your help! Nice job!!

where are the pics on how to do the upholstery? Refinishing the legs is the easy part. What about the rest?

Wonderful job. Having redone a chair and sofa myself I know how long it takes and what is involved. It is a labor of love to restore a family heirloom and always makes me feel really good about accomplishing it. Keep up the good work.

I have my Grandmother’s chair that I cannot seem to part with. It really needs to be reupholstered. I’m mostly happy to just see that I’m not the only one-and then to know how beautiful it turned out for you! Inspiring!
