What's the best way to care for plants in the winter ? I was told if you put your plants close to the house under a cover patio this is good . Is this the case ? Thank you for the help:)

I bring in what potted plants I can. For the ones which I cannot not (large container of hens and chicks, sage, chives), I place them next to my house in a little protected area next to the chimney. I group them together and put leaves on top and around - so they are somewhat protected. They generally make it thru. For my geraniums - this year they are on a window sill at work. I cut the Boston ferns back, and have them in the garage.

  • It depends on where you live and individual needs of the plants. If you live where it snows, move all potted plants to porch, patio, garage or barn. Google each plant to see what is required to winter them over.

If they are left in an area where the temperature goes below 36 degrees they will be damaged and if it goes below 32 they will probably be lost. If they are large and hardy, and they are in large pots they might can make it in a protected area if they are covered and the temperature doesn't go too low. If they are tropical plants or house plants they definitely need to come inside.

You don't say where you live, but some are not going to come back if they are in pots outside in the freezing cold. Perennials don't always come back if there roots are that frozen. In my experience in Minnesota, I have had mint and strawberries come back. I have had a couple of herbs come back that were in plastic window boxes on the ground by my veggie garden. Otherwise I have not had luck with perennials in pots unless I brought them in the house.
