I need help figuring out how to rid of fruit flies. They are swarming my kitchen and now they have migrated to my office, LR and BR. I used to be able to get rid of them with Apple cider vinegar in a shallow dish, but these bugs are even getting fat! and I have no fruit in my home! Please help!

Use a combination of dish soap and ammonia. Spray your garbage can ,drain in bathroom and kitchen sink

Put some in dish and let it sit in kitchen. If it works to get rid of mosquitos outside should work for your pesty houseguest. Good luck

There are a number of things one can do to control these pests:

*Put any countertop fruit or produce in the refrigerator.

*Create a trap by mixing apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap

*Use a foaming drain cleaner in your kitchen sink/s (Drano makes one, but there are others)

*Clean under the rubber gasket if you have a food disposall

*Make sure dishes are done every day

*Take out garbage daily. Make sure your trash cans are well covered.

*Get rid of damp areas, specifically in the bathroom and the kitchen. Gnats, especially drain gnats, get attracted to these kind of damp areas so do your best to keep them as dry as possible. Is there a leaking pipe? Do you have water entering from the outside when it rains? Find out the source and fix it.

*Pour bleach solution into the bathroom sink and tub drains. Warning: do not mix bleach with ammonia.

*Change the potting soil in your plants or use a malathion drench the next time you water.

*Fogging is an effective way to get rid of gnat or fruit fly swarms. If you are dealing with a large area then fogging is probably the most practical way of getting rid of gnats. The Burgess Insect Fogger is quite a popular choice for outdoor use. The Hot Shot Insect Fogger, on the other hand, has been the most popular item for indoor fogging.

Get an empty bottle, like a coke or beer bottle that has a narrow neck. Put about an inch of apple cider vinegar in the bottom. Take a piece of paper and roll it like a funnel and place it in the bottle on one end. It will attract the fruit flies and they can't get out once they get in. Try to make the funnel opening as large as possible and be sure you secure the paper at the bottom of the bottle. They will be attracted to the smell. Also, they lay their larvae on fruit so I suggest you put any bananas or fruit you have sitting out in the fridge. If this doesn't work, try getting a fruit fly strip at Home Depot or Lowes. Then place the bottle at the bottom of the hanging strip. It will attract them and once they land on the strip they can't get off. They are very inexpensive.

I do not know a home remedy but I recently purchased a cracked glass pear that has the solution that comes with it on line from Gardener's Supply. It is decorative and works well. Not trying to plug a business just where I got mine. They have an apple and a chicken too. I choice the pear as it goes with my kitchen decorations. Fruit flies are such pest and I hated them on my apples, bananas, and halo's. I have seen none since my pear purchase.

There is a Product called "Citrus Cleaner" the one I have is produced by a company named Purple Power there may be other brands also. It is mainly found in Automotive Shops somewhat like Auto Zone. It is in a Very Bright Orange Spray Bottle. Ask for it if you can't find it. They will know what you are looking for. You will have to spray them directly but it Will get Rid of them. Make sure to Wash your Fruit when you bring it into your Home, especially your Bananas. Rose G. from New Orleans, Louisiana

It might take more than one fogging, friend.

At room temperature, fruit flies can develop into adults within one to two weeks. The egg and larval stages span approximately eight days, while the pupal stage lasts six days. The adult fruit fly lives for several weeks. Twenty-four hours after a female fruit fly lays her eggs, larvae hatch.

What you're seeing now are likely the hatchlings of the first batch.

I found, by accident, that if you spray Dow Scrubbing Bubbles on them (even in flight) that they fall and then you simply wipe them up with a paper towel.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown.
