Antique Dresser Makeover

I picked up this antique dresser from a local second hand store last summer. Let me tell you...it was DISGUSTING! It smelled, it was filthy, was missing lots of the trim, had peeling veneer issues and no matching hardware. But...I'm a sucker to save the UGLY DUCKLING and it was crying to be saved! So...I loaded it up and hauled it home!
This is what the piece looks like after lots of work! A real firecracker!
This is how it looked when I spotted it in the back room of that second hand store.
Because the smell was so strong, I gave the entire dresser {inside and out} a couple coats of Kilz to seal out the nasties.
The shelves were missing so my husband cut some new boards. I gave the whole thing a few coats of my favorite red latex. I get a lot of my paint off the oops paint cart at my local hardware store so I can't say exactly what red it is, but I love it! {the gallon is almost gone now and I have no idea how I will go on once I use the last drop}
I sanded the edges and then rubbed the entire thing down with a dark walnut stain to get the aged look. The final step was to seal it with a satin poly.
I actually had a key in my stash that works on the locks for the drawers!

    The piece turned out really lovely! I'd love to find a bedroom suite in this style to paint for my granddaughter's "big girl" bedroom! This style is so lovely painted. As for the red paint, take the paint to a paint store, or paint a swatch on board or heavy cardboard. A paint store can scan the color and reproduce it for you!
