What causes Juniper (I think) the tree to turn brown and needles fall

Two of our 5 Juniper (?) trees turned brown and needles fall. They are coming back with new green limbs from the bottom up, only 4 ft of a 30 ft tree has come back green so far. Do we need more/less water, fertilizer, or what. Help, wouldn't want to start new trees again.

It sounds like a blight. Blights are caused by fungi that flourish in the spring and summer during periods of warm, damp weather. rune out the diseased branches, making pruning cuts into healthy wood. You can apply a fungicide to prevent the disease in the future.
