Depends on the size and shape of the room. You want to comfortably walk

    all around.

Usually people place the table so others can comfortably walk around it and be able to pull out the chairs so they can sit. The table is usually placed with the length of the table going the same way as the length of the room. There are always exceptions.

Usually based on size and shape of room and doorways/doors into the room. Walk around your table and see how accessing the chairs, getting around the room works, then make your decision.

I would place length wise to go along with the length of the dining room.

Our dining room is almost square, but not quite. So we place table on what is the longest stretch. However a lot of things could make this determination. The size of the table, built ins, door ways, traffic patterns etc. For a round table it doesn't matter because it will be both on the short run and the long run! Since I love china, silver and fabrics a table is an unending source of joy and play! Plus it is the place of filling the need for food, conversation, and family bonds.

Follow the shape of the room. Set table in centre under Light filtting.
