How can you help animals in severe winter weather in a 55 + community?

Bring pets indoors where they belong .

Sweaters when they have to go potty. Do NOT leave them outside in freezing weather

If you can't bring your pet in doors find an area where there is little or no wind. Put lots of straw inside the shelter and bails around the outside the shelter.

Add a heavy duty flexible flap over the door. This will keep their own body heat inside for them

Pets should be indoors in freezing weather.

If you are talking about feral or would animals. Natural selection.

I work with Pet rescues and if you have animals living in and around your community that do not have homes these are considered feral. There are many agencies (ASPCA) that will take these animals in and find them homes. Some will euthanize them. I prefer the ones that are no kill shelters. There are portable shelters made from tote bins or old coolers that can provide some safety. But in these very frigid temps I'm afraid you just have to pray that they find a warm place on their own. I worry about this more than I should. If you know the hymn His Eye is on the Sparrow then you can rest assured that God is watching out for His creation. Sometimes man just can't interfere. You can provide food for them.....dry food that won't freeze.

we made a shelter from an old cooler and we put out dry food everyday. We have seen them and even opossums, until this awful snowfall and bitter temps. Yes, we are trusting God to care for His creation so I try not to worry.

These are feral cats that are males so far.

Food and water. Change water frequently as it will freeze.

I found using big plastic storage bins help shelter them. They can see out if the bins are clear and it gets very warm inside with each one. I cut out a size appropriate door for the cats. Filled them with big, soft rags and they loved them. It would be better if you can put them on some boards to get them off the ground. Other than that, they are warm and washable with a hose.
