It is not good for potatoes because it raises the ph too much.
I wouldn't use ash in the garden, ash plus water equals lye. Very caustic.
I've never tried putting ash in the garden but I have read that it is good. So is egg shells, banana peels and coffee grounds.

Mind you it has to be pure wood ash, if mixed with charcoal or pressed logs, it will not be any good. I burn avocado and oak and have used in my yard and garden. Makes my plants happy when I have them.
Please, get a soil test done! You can get one done for under $10.00 at your County Agricultural Extension office. They will tell you how it is done. They will tell you what's needed for your soil.
