Giving a used brick fireplace a facelift

Corner barrel shaped fireplace needs a face lift. Painting is my first option as refacing it would most likely be expensive. Any suggestions?

Hi Diana. I think painting it would look nice. I would go with a off white.

My brother painted directly over the bricks on his fireplace using a "white wash" paint. He chose an off white shade which left a fresh, clean and neutral finish. The paint is thin thus maintaining the subtle shadows of the brick's original depth of color, pattern and texture.Soft white contrasts and a rustic finish makes it easy to modify the decor in the room if you want a slight change.I unfortunately do not have a pic to show you.I suggest further research so you can choose the optimal type of paint that will result in a "white wash" finish. It should also be heat and fire resistant. I am unsure if you can buy a product ready made or if you have to prepare the paint by adding water. Best of luck completing this project.

I used 5 different colors, smooshed them on with a sponge. Then framed this drab looking fireplace and put a mantelpiece on it. Really transformed it!

If you like the look of the brick but it's gotten dull, try using linseed oil on it. I used it on my brick fireplace and it really made the bricks pop. That was 7 yrs ago and it still looks good. This is a time-consuming process because you need to coat each brick (maybe a couple of times) but it worked for me.

Budget is always key in any project and then style. Paint is always the biggest bang for your buck. You can go with concrete or a,combination of materials.
