Can you paint over wallpaper?

My entire main living area is wallpaper, which we like, but I'd like to add some color to it. It looks like it was sponge painted, and has white and beige. Thinking about adding a touch of blue or aqua to match my decor.

Some wall paper can be painted. Use a good primer...and a good paint, a couple coats.
Hi Kathy, You can paint over wallpaper as long as it's secure. Remove any loose paper. If the wall paper is not secure, you'll end up with a bubbly, awful mess. The secret to painting wallpaper is light coats. Let each coat dry completely before applying another coat. Another option is wainscot. Maybe do one feature wall with a nice chair rail and paint it blue. Although it is "possible" to paint over wallpaper, it is not recommended simply from the standpoint that it will be very difficult to remove if the results do not meet with your expectations, or when the time comes that the wallpaper's "shelf life" has expired, and it needs to be removed.
I would suggest that you read through other Hometalkers questions and answers regarding problems with painted wallpaper removal first, before you start this idea.
If you want painted walls, from my experience, the best advice is to remove the wallpaper first, then start with new paint.
