We have the same furnace heat and we were told it is best not to close any vents off, but if we did not to do many. We keep one bedroom off and the door closed. If too many rooms are blocked off it puts stress on the vents and the blower to force it into the rooms. 60% blocked off is way too much for example. Hope this helps. A friend of ours close by had to replace her gas forced air furnace when it was only 4 yrs old due to closing off the rooms in every room but one or two.

It makes sense, and can be an energy saving practice, especially considering that much of the world lives without central heating in their homes, to heat only the areas that are used the most.

It takes more energy and is harder on the furnace to completely heat any area from 'no heat' to 'high heat', so it is best to not completely block off any vent to any room, but rather to close it down partially. You will find that in doing so, the rooms where the vents are all the way open will feel warmer, as more of the hot forced air will be going in these rooms.

It is easier on your furnace to eep the thermostat at a steady level, and use throws or put on a sweater to accommodate individual preferences.

I used to cover the vents in unused rooms in my last house and the rooms got cold. I do not know what kind of house you live in or if it is more complicated than that, but why don't you ask who services your furnace just to be safe?

it depends...Where is your thermostat located? is it in a central location such as a living room? do you have a closure vent on the heat register in the rooms you want to shut off? Closing the vents on the rooms you want to bypass will have no effect on your furnace.

Thanks very much for the links. I learned a lot and thought that they were very informative. I am opening the vents in all rooms as a result of reading the information. Certainly appreciate your help. Eileen Fancher
