i might start with the rooms furthest from the doors and work your way out of the house. updating can be messy, but you may leave it a bit cleaner by not having to back track.
Start at the most important room, unless you have no experience! If that's the case - start at the least important and smallest room and start at the top and work down. If you carry on in this way, by the time you get to the biggest and most important room, you will be quite experienced at DIY.
Start with an easy project so you will be motivated when it’s done.

Start with simple, easy, fun, large visual or practical impact. In my experience waning interest in long or difficult projects is the danger.
