Installing curtain rods

Please help. My newish home has new windows. No hangers to put up curtains. What's correct way to nail the curtain rod brackets. Above the molding, or over the molding. My brother suggested 3 inches on both sides of the windows.

You can buy the hardware at home improvement or Walmart stores. Hardware to hang them comes with new curtain rods also.

Thanks it's a work in progress. I keep finding more things to do and my friend has been a life saver. He's been doing my yard work almost every time it needs to be cut.

Somewhat depends on the style of molding since some styles accommodate the brackets better than others. I have found that there are no rules and the 3 x 3 your brother suggested is as good as any.

From my perspective, if you can run the screws into wooden structure and still like the way the curtain looks, that is the way to go. Don't know if anyone has luck with drywall anchors but I do not. They are a last resort and I nearly always end up with them spinning in the hole. Then I have to use toggle bolts, which cannot be removed and reinstalled. When someone invents a good drywall anchor I'll change my mind.

Thanks it's still a work in progress. So much to do around the house inside and out.

It depends what you want, the look you are trying to achieve, and what type of curtains you are planning on hanging. I've done it both ways.

Thanks, my nephew and friend both helped. But when I got around to hanging my curtains I discovered my nephew put the hanger too close to the the molding and it had to come out and repositioned. The spare bedroom curtain panels have a 1 inch rise over the curtain. I'll need to eventually take them down and either remove the thread in sheer curtain or sew a 1 inch line on the curtain panels to match the sheets.

I hear you. Been here seven years and there is always another project. One at a time.

  • If possible, try to hang your curtain rod higher to make the room look larger. As long as your curtains go all the way to the floor, this will make a big difference. We purchased long curtains so that we can hang the rods close to the ceiling to make the ceilings feel taller than they are.

Thanks, I bought cheap closeout curtains from JCPenney. I'm a new home owner now. Plus recently I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The bills are piling up and it's not over. I wish I let the garden wait until next year. But I decided to spend the money and rented a rototiller to dig up the ground. It looks really nice now. Hope all is well with you. I'm optimistic my doctor told me the surgery and type of cancer I have is highly treatable. It's happening next month.
