Recently took up the nasty carpet. All the surrounding wood is knotty pine. My husband wants it light colored.

Did you see this link? I’m not sure if this color scheme appeals to you. Its a nice traditional look from -an all wood tone perspective.

I love that the old skool knotty pine is installed horizontally - it really makes it far more updated. Personally, I would either paint or put a runner on the stairs that is light colored or a rich color "statement". IMHO, too much wood is too much of what should be a good thing.is light colored or a rich color "statement". IMHO, too much wood is too much of what should be a good thing.

If you want to retain the wood, what about a white pickling stain? Or pale colored stain that goes with your surrounding decor? I did an art piece on light wood that I stained with a pale dusky blue. The color is gorgeous and they do make stains in all types of colors.

If nothing else, I encourage you to at least paint the risers white or light.

I tried staining my basem stairs but they turned out very splotchy. I ended up painting over them a light color (kind of a mustard yellow) and then used a dry brush technique over that with gel stain. i used walnut, but you could use a lighter stain if that’s your preference. I then added carpet treads with a bullnose edge that I ordered from amazon (very easy to install...peel off backing and stick them on). I’m very happy with the result.

    Any color paint or stain

I would put a nice stain on them and then a carpet runner. The runner would break up the wood a little bit and add some color. Also quiets the noise on the steps.

I’m for staining the treads, painting the risers, and using carpet treads or an attached runner. This will all be in your and hubs choice of colors (of course)!

Then your stairs will be beautiful, protected (do you have dogs?), and safe to maneuver.

Like to see what you decide to do 😁!

The wood is pretty; why not just seal it? Then add a runner or not.

oh please don't cover that beautiful knotty pine....I am just a complete sucker for natural wood...white wash it for a brighter look, or half paint, half white wash and the rest poly...

Have you considered asking the Home Depot for painting tips for wood stairs. Light oak would be nice and you can put rubber strips for your safety. Hope that helps

Are you doing something to the wall beside the steps too?

Personally I think a darker brown would look nice. It would draw out the brown knots in surrounding pine.
